Install and activate your eSIM

How to install and activate your SimSIM eSIM on iPhone or Android. Set it up on Wi-Fi before you travel, then switch your data line when you arrive.

Before you begin

  • An eSIM-compatible, carrier-unlocked phone.
  • A stable Wi-Fi connection throughout installation.
  • Your purchased plan in the SimSIM app.
Check device compatibility

Keep your eSIM installed

An eSIM belongs to one device and cannot be transferred. Do not delete its profile while you still need your plan; it cannot be reinstalled from the SimSIM app.

Which phone are you setting up?

Install before you travel

Add the eSIM while you have a reliable internet connection. Keep your current data line selected until you arrive.

App installation works on both iPhone and Android. Open your plan and tap Install eSIM. Use QR or manual entry only if this button does not work for you.

Start with the SimSIM app

Install from My eSIMs

Open the SimSIM app → My eSIMs → the plan for this trip. Tap Install eSIM. Your phone opens its eSIM installer directly; no QR code or manual codes are needed.

Step 1 of 4

Your new line appears under a local network name, not “SimSIM”. The illustrations use “Network name” to represent that line.

Find your installation details

In the SimSIM app, open My eSIMs → your plan → the three-dot menu → Show QR / Manual install. Display the QR code on another screen for scanning. On a supported phone, you can also long-press the QR code to open setup on the same device.

Open your eSIM settings

Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code.

iOS 26 and later: choose Data Only if asked. Earlier iOS: keep Primary for the default line, iMessage/FaceTime, and cellular data during setup. Switch mobile data only after arrival.

Installation complete

Keep your primary data line selected until you arrive. Then follow the connection steps below.

Activate at your destination

Activate at your destination

At a destination covered by your plan, select the eSIM you installed for mobile data. Confirm its line and data roaming are enabled. Your plan details explain its validity and activation conditions.

Select your travel line for mobile data

Under Cellular Data (or Mobile Data), select your travel eSIM. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so your phone does not switch data back to your primary line.

Step 1 of 3

Screen labels and layouts may vary with your phone language and OS version.

Check that you are connected

  • Confirm the travel eSIM is enabled and selected for mobile data.
  • Confirm data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and open a web page to test your mobile data.

Keeping your primary line on may incur charges for calls and SMS under your home carrier’s terms. SimSIM is a data-only eSIM.

When you’re back home

Switch back to your usual SIM so calls and mobile data use your home plan.

Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data). Turn your primary line on if needed, select it under Cellular Data, and check Default Voice Line. Open the travel eSIM and turn off Turn On This Line.

Restore automatic network selection

If you selected an operator manually, restore automatic selection on that line before turning it off. Also check that your primary line uses automatic selection so it can reconnect at home. Use the same Network Selection / Network operators screen described in troubleshooting.

Turn the travel eSIM off; keep its profile. Turning a line off does not delete it. Keep the profile while you still need the plan: a deleted eSIM cannot be reinstalled from the SimSIM app. Turning it off does not pause or extend the plan’s validity. Check your plan’s expiry and top-up options in My eSIMs.

Troubleshooting

Installed but not connected? First confirm your destination is covered, the travel eSIM is on and selected for mobile data, and its data roaming is on. Toggle airplane mode or restart your phone. Keep the eSIM installed while troubleshooting.

Check your APN

APN settings normally configure themselves. Change them only if your eSIM has signal but no internet, or support asks you to. In SimSIM, open My eSIMs → your plan and copy the APN field exactly. There is no single APN for every plan.

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → your travel eSIM → Cellular Data Network. Some versions use Mobile Data → Mobile Data Options → Mobile Data Network.
  2. Under Cellular Data, enter the APN from the app. Leave username and password empty. Go back to save automatically, restart your iPhone, and test mobile data.
More help and menu variations

No Cellular Data Network option on iPhone? The provider controls the APN automatically. Try manual network selection or contact support. An iOS update can reset a manually entered APN.

Select a network operator manually

Try this after arrival if you have no service, signal without internet, or an unstable connection. In SimSIM, open My eSIMs → your plan and note the partner network for your destination. Change only the travel eSIM’s settings.

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → your travel eSIM → Network Selection.
  2. Turn off Automatic. Allow up to two minutes for the search, then choose the network listed in the app and wait for signal and the check mark.
More help and menu variations

Network names may repeat or appear as number codes. If one entry fails, try another entry for that same network, then other partner networks listed in the app. If iPhone’s Network Selection is missing after selecting the correct eSIM, contact support.

Full Help Center instructions

Still offline? In the app, open Account → Help Center. Include your order number, phone model, OS version, and screenshots of the APN or network list. Do not delete the eSIM.

eSIM installation questions

Should I install my eSIM before travelling?

Yes. Install while you have stable Wi-Fi, then select the travel eSIM for mobile data after arrival. Check your individual plan for its activation and validity conditions.

Can I install an eSIM without a second phone?

Yes. Use Install eSIM directly in the SimSIM app. On supported phones, long-pressing the QR code also opens setup. Manual installation is another option if needed.

Why is my eSIM not called SimSIM?

The device displays a local network’s name rather than SimSIM. This is normal. Select the eSIM you just installed when choosing your travel data line.

Why is my installed eSIM not connecting?

Check that you are in a covered destination, that the correct line is selected for mobile data, and that data roaming is enabled for it. If the issue continues, use the Help Center without deleting the eSIM.

Need a hand getting online?

Keep the eSIM installed. Our Help Center covers connection issues, APN settings, and network selection.
